Gallery updated two spaces in this Manhattan loft bathroom renovation: one full-size bathroom and one powder room for guests. We often think of design in purely aesthetic terms, but the clients who purchased this loft in Tribeca were confident that the renovation should have a meaning connected to their lives. The resulting bathrooms are now crisp, contemporary spaces that not only satisfied the clients’ aesthetic and personal desires but have also continued to resonate within the interior design community. In 2019 on Houzz, the powder room gained the distinction of Top 10 Powder Room Renovations and the full-size bathroom of Most Saved Bathroom Renovations.
The key detail to bring a personal connection to their bathroom renovation quickly became clear: the New York City Subway’s 6 train. While seemingly arbitrary, the true reason is a sentimental one: the clients are a couple, and the 6 train is where they met! More specifically, the client suggested incorporating the bright green color associated with the 4, 5, and 6 lines, a hue distinct to New Yorkers. Though initially a bit apprehensive, we rose to the creative challenge, thanks in part to the confidence of the clients. The central focus became how to ground the rest of the space around such a striking hue. We tied it together by incorporating monochromatic elements with New York motifs, including a subway sign, black and white wallpaper depicting NY scenes, modern stacked subway tiles in white, and matte black fixtures. To commit to the theme even further, the vanity color was customized to the true subway green for an exact match.
For clients that love to entertain, as these do, a neatly designed guest bathroom is vital. In this home, that space is the powder room. The focal point here was another brightly colored vanity, this time in blue. Their preferred blue came with a long lead time that would significantly delay the project. To avoid that, we compromised by purchasing the same vanity in a different color, then refinished it ourselves to match the blue tone our clients had in mind. We rounded out the contemporary aesthetic with fixtures in brass and brushed gold, a minimalist wall mirror, modern globe-shaped light sconces, and a combination of subway tiles with a herringbone pattern on the floor.
Our main goal was to update both spaces to fit a contemporary yet personalized aesthetic, with a secondary goal to incorporate a washer and dryer within the main bathroom. Luckily, this Manhattan loft bathroom renovation took place in a building without strict wet over dry restrictions; by expanding the bathroom’s original footprint, we were able to incorporate both machines into the enlarged space, conveniently tucked away behind a half wall.
