Upper West Side Pre-War Co-Op Renovation

ABOUT THIS PROJECT

For this co-op renovation on the Upper West Side, the client wasn't looking to completely change their pre-war apartment from modern to contemporary, or go fully classic. What they did know was being less than a block away from Central Park meant a total overhaul of their recently-purchased space would make the most of their property value. So, we worked with the client to find a design middle ground that tastefully married various styles to create a more open, functional, and overly pristine lay-out. To achieve the look, we did a full gut renovation of the space, including wall openings in the living room, new closets in the hallway, a total overhaul of two bathroom and the kitchen, and updated flooring throughout.

Dictating Design

Because this pre-war co-op renovation was so large, part of our challenge was making sure we stayed within budget. We always want the best for our clients, even if that means getting creative with our design, in order to maximize the final output. In this case, the wood floors weren't in fantastic shape and could have been replaced. However, to conserve our budget, we refinished them instead and used a dark stain to the hide any imperfections. In turn, the flooring choice grounded the home's whole design, allowing us to juxtapose the dark tone with fresh white walls and bold furniture choices.

Kitchen Revival

As you can see from the before images below, this walk-up kitchen needed some serious TLC when we arrived. To modernize the space, we added flat-panel cabinetry, which isn't often associated with pre-war renovations. However, with the seamless, veined quartz countertops and backsplash, the cabinets blend well, trying everything together for a blended contemporary-classic look that makes the cooking space immediately more manageable.

Some Highlights

  • Two bathroom overhauls, each with a unique look and modern feel that blends into the home's overall transitional aesthetic
  • To compliment the stark Black and white tones, every room makes good use of lighting, blending a mix of decorative lighting, chandeliers, recessed ceiling lighting, and under cabinet lighting to illuminate the right areas and reduce shadows

Our success stories

Forget about any horror story you have heard about contractors. Stop right here. This is the design-build contractor you want to HIRE. It was a breeze working with Aaron and Jonathan on our apartment combination project. We looked at quiet a few design-build companies and chose Gallery because of the great communication and the fact that they were able to manage material purchasing and product selection for us….They were honest, took responsibility and pride in their work.”

Gallery did a gut renovation of the two extremely dated bathrooms in our 1940 Bayside home. We couldn’t be more pleased with the results! The process from beginning to end was facilitated by their team, who came up with great design ideas and suggestions. They were always on top of the project and responded to our questions/problems quickly, with 100% resolution. I would not hesitate to recommend them!

After my wife and I purchased our West Village condo, we knew a renovation was first on our list of priorities. After a thorough search and meeting numerous firms, we found Gallery Kitchen and Bath and at Gallery we met Eli who from beginning was prepared to go above and beyond other contractors we met to make sure our vision came to fruition. From start to finish, Eli and team were hands on through the decision making process, carefully stepping us through our decisions and their implications.

From the start, we wanted a crew that could do full service (design and build). After looking at some other designs, we really liked what Gallery offered in way of aesthetics. Then, during the entire process, the team was all over it! Issues always come up, but it’s how these guys handled them that make me here writing a positive review. Can’t recommend them highly enough

I enthusiastically recommend Gallery and especially our project manager Eli, who did a superb job renovating our once decrepit 2-bedroom apartment in Brooklyn Heights. The project involved a full kitchen and bathroom renovation, as well as new electrical, refinished floors, new doors, new baseboards, and some rearranged bedroom closets. What is more, when I have them the wrong paint color for my daughter’s bedroom, and the team started to paint that color, they got the paint I wanted and corrected the “mistake” (which has actually been my mistake) and didn’t charge me for that either. I’d choose them again 100 times over and definitely recommend them to anyone considering a similar project.

We interviewed about 8 different companies before hiring a contractor for our apartment renovations. We immediately clicked with Peter, our project manager, and although Gallery was not the cheapest option, we chose them based on their upfront billing format, high client reviews, and depth of knowledge after speaking with Peter and Aaron. We loved how it was a “one stop shop” and were paying one bill, up front. …Everything was very transparent and we could not be happier with the results! Our apartment looks exactly how we imagined. Thank you!!
